About the plan

Why the Oregon State Rail Plan is important

Oregon's rail system has helped connect communities and grow the state's economy for more than 150 years.

  • The plan provides a framework for state and federal investments in rail projects that benefit economic development, daily commutes and the environment.
  • It's crucial for meeting growing transportation option needs, improving supply chain efficiency and helping meet Oregon's climate goals via reduced highway congestion and pollution.
  • The plan is required for ODOT to be eligible for federal grant opportunities. Federal grant funding is limited and a thorough, robust plan helps Oregon compete against other states.

Why we're updating the State Rail Plan

  • The Federal Railroad Administration requires states to update their rail plans every four years.
  • We update the plan to adapt to changing conditions and new priorities. This ensures the rail network continues to meet the evolving needs of people and businesses in Oregon.
  • Regular updates also maintain Oregon's eligibility for federal funding and provide a strategic blueprint for investments.
