As Interstate 5 passes through Roseburg, it crosses the South Umpqua River at milepost 124.5 near the local V.A. grounds. The southbound and northbound bridges (built in 1955 and 1976, respectively) are located side by side and are known collectively as "Vets Bridge" due to their location and similar appearance.
Prior to construction, both structures were experiencing several problems: failure of the paint covering the steel truss, non-functioning bearings that were caked with debris and dust, minor cracking in the surface of the bridge deck, and failure of the bridge joints.
This project repainted the steel truss, repaired or replaced bearings and joints, and sealed cracks on the deck with a thin bonded overlay. The bridge was also strengthened to better withstand earthquakes.
Interstate 5, MP 124.5 -- Vets Bridge is located in Roseburg, north of the I-5 Harvard interchange (Exit 124).
