Summary

Updated functionality in Metrc, the Cannabis Tracking System (CTS), requires a change in how secondary lab sample test results - such as sub-contracted and composited packages - are entered. The process change will ensure that all test results are properly attributed to the source batch.

The new entry pathway is now available for lab licensees to use in the CTS and will be the required method of entry for secondary lab samples starting September 1, 2026. Failure to adhere to the new process after September 1, 2026 will result in missing test results for the source package.

Steps
  1. Primary Lab Sample entry: The primary laboratory will record all compliance test results (including subcontracted testing) performed on the source batch under the primary sample packages in Metrc.

    • Record each individual compliance test result under their primary samples.
    • Once all lab tests are entered, associated packages will update to the appropriate status in Metrc.

  2. Secondary Lab Sample entry: The laboratory testing the composite sample will record only the test type “Composite Testing Complete” in Metrc onto the composite sample.
    • Do not enter individual compliance tests under the composite sample.
    • Only one line entry is needed per sample regardless of the number of tests performed.
    • Once the test has been entered, the associated packages will update to Testing in Progress.
