Unmanned Aircraft Systems

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is working towards providing its customers with rules and guidance on the Public use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in its Parks. OPRD is beginning the process of amending the Oregon Administrative Rules guiding the take-off and landing of drones in state parks and along the ocean shore. More information is available on the OPRD Proposed Rule Making Web page.

The use of UAS as part of scientific research in State Park property, including the Ocean Shore State Recreation Area, requires a Scientific Research Permit issued by OPRD.

OPRD operates UAS in support of its mission to provide and protect outstanding natural, scenic, cultural, historic and recreational sites for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations. ORS 837.300 to ORS 873.390 relate to the use of UAS. ORS 837.362 requires the posting of policies related to drone use by a public body. OPRD polices related to internal drone use are:

Oregon Revised Statute 192.345 relates to public records conditionally exempt from public disclosure.
