Individual Initial Registration

Overview

Individuals seeking initial architect registration in Oregon must meet education, examination, and experience requirements established by the Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners (OSBAE).

Applicants must submit a completed NCARB Record documenting education, experience, and examination requirements.

Registration Requirements

Applicants must request transmittal of their completed NCARB record to OSBAE.

The NCARB Record must include official documentation of the following:

Education Requirement

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • A professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB)
  • A professional degree in architecture from a Canadian university accredited or certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB)

Architectural Experience Program (AXP)

Applicants must successfully complete the Architectural Experience Program (AXP).

Architect Registration Examination (ARE)

Applicants must successfully pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

Additional Firm Registration Requirement

Architects providing architectural services under any name other than their individual name registered with the Board followed by the title “Architect” must also register as a firm with:

  • OSBAE
  • the Oregon Secretary of State

Examples may include:

  • Sole proprietorships operating as LLCs
  • Assumed business names
  • Incorporated business entities

Registration Process

Step 1 — Request NCARB Record Transmittal

Request that NCARB transmit your completed Record to OSBAE.

The NCARB Record must include documentation of:

  • Education
  • Experience
  • Examination completion

Step 2 — Submit the Application

Submit a completed Registration by Examination Application to:

architectboard@osbae.oregon.gov

Applicants should keep copies of all submitted materials for their records.

Step 3 — Pay Applicable Fees

Applicants must pay:

  • the Application Fee
  • the Certificate of Registration Fee

Step 4 — Complete the Oregon Jurisprudence Exam (JE)

Applicants must pass the Oregon Jurisprudence Exam (JE).

Information regarding the Jurisprudence Exam will be provided after:

  • Completion of the application
  • Payment of the application fee
