Overview
Businesses providing architectural services in Oregon must register as a firm with the Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners (OSBAE).

If you are operating as a corporation, limited liability company (LLC), partnership, or assumed business name that provides architectural services in Oregon, firm registration is required.
Registration Requirements
Firm Representative Requirements
The architectural firm representative must be an officer or voting member of the architectural firm or have an ownership interest in the architectural firm.
Architect in Responsible Control Requirements
The practice of architecture by businesses in Oregon must be managed and directed by one or more architects registered under ORS 671.010 to 671.220.
Entity Requirements
Any business providing architectural services in Oregon must register with OSBAE.
This includes:
- incorporated sole proprietorships,
- limited liability companies (LLCs),
- businesses operating under an assumed business name,
- engineering firms employing architect(s) and offering architectural services, and
- multi-profession businesses providing architectural services.
If you are practicing architecture through an LLC or incorporated business structure, firm registration is required.
Oregon Business Registration Requirements
Firm owners are responsible for meeting Oregon business registration requirements through the Oregon Secretary of State.
Applicants are encouraged to consult:
- an attorney,
- certified public accountant (CPA),
- or business advisor
for guidance regarding business registration requirements.
Firm Name Requirements
The firm name used for registration must comply with Board requirements.
Plural Use of “Architects”
A firm may only use the plural form “architects” in its name if more than one architect is actively registered in a Board-recognized jurisdiction.
Use of Surnames
If the firm name includes a surname, the individual:
- must currently or previously have been an owner or employee of the firm, or
- must have had a contractual relationship with the firm involving the practice of architecture in Oregon.
Use of Terms Such as “Group,” “Associates,” or “Partners”
Terms suggesting multiple principals, directors, partners, or associates may only be used when those individuals are currently or were previously associated with the firm.
Examples include:
- Associates
- Group
- & Associates
- Partners
Use of Numbers in Firm Names
Numbers used in firm names must not mislead the public.
Example:
- “Three Oregon Architects” must accurately represent three architects registered in Oregon.
Registration Process
Step 1 — Register Your Business Name
Register the firm name or assumed business name with the Oregon Secretary of State. Applicants must also obtain a Certificate of Existence for the business name being used in Oregon.
Step 2 — Submit the Application
Submit:
- a completed Architectural Firm Application,
- the Certificate of Existence,
- and any required supporting documents.
Applications may be submitted by:
- email to architectboard@osbae.oregon.gov, or
- mail to the Board office address listed below.
Applicants should keep a copy of all submitted materials for their records. Applications remain valid for 12 months from the date received by the Board.
Step 3 — Pay Applicable Fees
Applicants must pay:
- the Application Fee, and
- the Certificate of Registration Fee.
