Treasurer Steiner visited Portland State University’s campus in March, sitting down with students and faculty to hear firsthand what financial challenges are on their minds.
The conversations touched on the rising cost of living, student loan repayments, and the stress of navigating a tough economy. These issues mirror findings from the new Oregon Financial Wellness Scorecard, which highlights the growing pressure Oregonians face around housing and basic needs.
PSU’s approach is to meet their students where they are. Treasurer Steiner toured their Financial Wellness Center, Food Pantry and Basic Needs Hub, visited the Resource Center for Students with Children, and spoke with veterans at the Veteran Resource Center. In each space, the students and staff shared the same philosophy: building relationships first, then connecting people to resources.
Despite real financial pressures, PSU students continue to dream big about careers, families, and their financial futures. And since the majority of PSU graduates go on to work in Oregon, the university’s investment in student success pays dividends for the whole state.
