In the nine years since joining Treasury, Trisha Mahaffey has grown from executive assistant to leading the front-line team that supports every division. A former medic in the Oregon Army National Guard, she brings a steady, service-oriented approach that has helped carry Treasury through times of transition and a global pandemic without missing a beat.

What is your professional background and what brought you to this role?

I worked as a medic for the Oregon Army National Guard from 2009-2015, spending two of those years coordinating immunization clinics for units across Oregon. I also worked as a quality assurance manager for six years at a furniture manufacturer that supplied IKEA stores across the US.

Since joining Treasury, my role has evolved considerably. I started as the Chief Administrative Officer’s executive assistant and now oversee a team of talented individuals dedicated to supporting the agency.

How does your experience serving in the Oregon Army National Guard shape the way you approach your work?

My time in the National Guard taught me that I was capable of more than I realized. It gave me a stronger sense of who I was and inspired me to pursue new challenges in both my career and personal life with greater confidence.

In your time at Treasury, you’ve navigated some significant transitions. What stands out the most?

One of the most memorable transitions was managing an in-office crew during COVID while simultaneously packing up the office for a building move. It was stressful, but it also kept things interesting and even a little fun.

I actually missed the transition from Treasurer Read to Treasurer Steiner entirely. I was on maternity leave when it happened! I came back to a new boss and a largely new team. Thankfully, they were all wonderful and made my return feel seamless.

You work closely with people across every division at Treasury. What has that vantage point taught you about the people who are drawn to public service?

Working with people from across the agency and building those relationships has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time here. One common theme I notice in so many of my colleagues is a genuine desire to be in public service. When I see people taking such pride in their work, it motivates and inspires me to do the same.

What book, podcast, or other resource(s) has influenced your thinking recently?

We’ve been reading more books with the kids lately as a way to wind down after long days. It has really helped me slow down and appreciate the moments with our children that can get lost in the busyness of everyday life.
