Bicycle Facilities

Standards for markings on bicycle facilities can be found in:
Green colored markings have been approved for use on State highways and all local jurisdictions' roadways.  See the Statewide Interim Approval letter​ for conditions of this approval.  Per the conditions of approval, please report all locations in your jurisdiction where green markings are installed to Gary Obery, ODOT Active Modes Traffic Engineer, at gary.r.obery@odot.state.or.us​.

For other bicycle facility markings, the Federal Highway Administration provides a list of bicycle-related marking treatments and their current approval status (e.g.: can be implemented, currently experimental).

Training

Pavement Marking Design - Layout and Detailing
This class provides pavement marking designers with current policies, standards, procedures, and specifications specific to ODOT.  Topics include:
  • Understanding Standard Drawings and Specifications
  • General pavement marking principles
  • Longitudinal line and transverse marking standards
  • Raised pavement marker standards
  • Materials and application methods
This class will satisfy 7.5 Professional Development Hours required by the Oregon Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying (OSBEELS) to renew a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
