Choosing Care that Works Best
Your Benefit Board wants to offer health plans that give you care that works best. Care that "works best" is care that gets the best results for your health, is safe, and uses health care resources in the most efficient ways. It’s the type of care you want for yourself and your family.

To find out what types of care work best, doctors and others do scientific studies of patient care. The results from this medical research are called "medical evidence."

Each patient is different, but medical research can show whether some types of health care tend to get better results than others for patients with certain conditions.

When there is medical evidence from research that shows which care works best, then your health plan should make sure that evidence is part of "good quality" care.

"It can be a big worry for us when our little boy gets sick. We want to make sure he gets the right kind of care – the kind that helps him feel better as soon as possible."

When there is enough medical evidence to know what types of care work best, this evidence can be used to set "quality standards" or "guidelines" for good patient care. Care that follows these standards or guidelines is sometimes called "evidence-based care" because it is based on the evidence that comes from medical research.

"To give my patients with asthma the best possible care, I follow the national quality guidelines for patients with asthma. These guidelines are based on medical research that was reviewed by leading asthma specialists.

I have a chart that lists all of the guidelines. It’s a handy reminder about all the things that need to happen for good asthma care."

Medical Homes Take Hold in Oregon

Building on its success with PEBB members, Providence Choice is expanding its medical home concept across the state. Look for news on new medical homes during Open Enrollment.

2010 Flu Vaccine Clinics

Your Benefit Board will sponsor flu vaccine clinics in worksites around the state mid-September through December.

Clinics will offer federally approved vaccines by nasal spray and injection.

Participants must show their PEBB plan ID card and complete a form. Dependents must be at least 12 years old; a parent or guardian must be present and sign consent for dependents age 15 and younger.

Clinics require at least 20 participants (see Requirements). Coordinators can request a clinic by e-mail to office@getaflushot.com or by completing the form at www.GetAFluShot.com website (click To Request Service).

It's All About You

When media report that "[a percent] of Oregonians are at risk of [a disease] because they [do a behavior]," what does it mean to you?

Maybe not so much. After all, you’re not a percent; you’re a person. You’ll learn more about how your individual choices affect your health through an individual assessment.

Your health plan offers a completely confidential questionnaire that asks basic-to-detailed questions about your health history, daily habits and exam results – from fruit and vegetable intake to cholesterol levels. You can print the results to talk over with your doctor or use them to start a plan for improving your well-being.

New Weight Watchers Process Coming

One call is all it will take to enroll in Weight Watchers beginning this fall. Your health plans want to simplify the enrollment and renewal process. Weight Watchers will post the new process online in October.

Beginning 2011, principal subscribers will be required to complete a health risk assessment for no-cost participation. Weight Watchers will continue the discount offer for dependents.

PEBB members say "YES!" Read Their Stories of Success.
