Multihazard and Risk Study for Mount Hood

Study Limitations

We developed the best databases we could, but within our funding and time constraints we were able to develop only those described in Section 6, Definitions. We were not able to compile or develop comprehensive hazard or asset data, so hazards like ash-fall and wildfire and assets like sewer lines and local power lines were not included.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the GIS databases, but it is not feasible to completely verify all of the original input data. No budget for field work was included in the project award, so we did very little field checking of hazard or asset data.

The methods followed to create the hazard and asset data ranged significantly in detail, so errors related to the varying detail in methodology are possible. For example, the landslide mapping protocol (Burns and Madin, 2009) has great detail, but we constructed the road bridge database by simply combining an existing database and some ?heads up? digitizing of feature locations from lidar. Also, the methods we followed have limitations described by the author(s) of the original publications.

The mapping is a ?snapshot? view of the current landscape that may change as new information regarding hazards and/or assets becomes available or future (new) hazards occur and/or new assets are built. Some hazards or assets have been mitigated. Because it is not feasible to collect detailed site-specific information on every hazard and asset, mitigation has been omitted; thus, we have assumed the worst case for all hazards and assets.

Again, because of these limitations the data and results of the analysis are intended for regional purposes only and cannot replace site-specific investigations. Please contact DOGAMI if errors and/or omissions are found so that they can be corrected in future versions of this data.
