Maintain Registration

​A Registered Landscape Architect on inactive or inactive emeritus status can request a return to active practice status by submitting:

  • a written request asking to return to active status;
  • the current year’s renewal fee; and
  • continuing education documentation as required in OAR 804-025-0015 (as will be verified by an audit)

​A request to switch back to active status or a request to move from active to either inactive or inactive emeritus status can be completed in the Registrant Portal​. 

NOTE: A Registered Landscape Architect registrant on inactive or inactive emeritus status is not authorized to practice landscape architecture in Oregon. A registrant on inactive status may not use the Registered Landscape Architect title or any similar title in Oregon. A registrant on inactive emeritus status may use the title Registered Landscape Architect, emeritus or any similar title indicating the emeritus or retired status in Oregon.

Each Landscape Architect-in-Training (LAIT) and Registered Landscape Architect is given an annual renewal date by the Board. If registration is not renewed on time, it lapses the very next day after the renewal date. Your renewal date will always be the last day of the month in which you first registered. For example, if you were registered on May 16, your renewal date is May 31, and if you do not renew by then, your registration lapses on June 1.

The renewal window opens 45 days before your renewal date. The Board will send a renewal notice to your email address on file. However, even if you do not receive this notice, you are still responsible for renewing your registration on time each year.

You can renew your registration online and pay securely by credit card. If you renew online, you do not need to send any paperwork to the Board office. Simply use the Registrant Portal​.

If you are not able to renew online, you must send a signed certificate showing your continuing education and the required fee to the Board office. If you need help with renewal, contact the Board office directly.

If you do not complete renewal and payment of fees by your renewal date, your registration will lapse. However, you have a 30-day grace period after your renewal date to complete your renewal without paying a late fee.

Every Landscape Architect-in-Training (LAIT) and Registered Landscape Architect must check and update their contact information during the yearly renewal process. This helps the Board keep accurate records for all registrants.

If your contact information changes outside the annual renewal period, you must notify the Board within 30 days. This ensures your information remains current year-round.

  • Active registrants can update their contact details at any time using the online Registrant Portal​.

  • Alternatively, you may send a written notice about changes by letter or email to the Board office.

Your registration is considered lapsed if you are a Landscape Architect-in-Training or Registered Landscape Architect and you do not finish the renewal process by the annual renewal date. The renewal is not complete until the Board has received your renewal application, payment of fees, and confirmation of continuing education.

If you miss your renewal date but complete all requirements within 60 days after that date, here is what to expect:

  • If you finish the renewal within 30 days after the renewal date, you do not have to pay a late fee.
  • If you finish the renewal more than 30 days but not more than 60 days after the renewal date, you must pay a late fee.

If you do not renew within 60 days but do so within 5 years of the last renewal due date (the reinstatement period), you must apply for reinstatement. To do this, you need to complete all renewal requirements and send in the following:

  • A written request to the Board explaining why you did not renew on time.
  • Proof of continuing education as required by OAR 804-025-0015 (audited except for LAITs).
  • All Board-required fees, including renewal and late fees for each lapsed year.

You can submit a reinstatement request online using the Registrant Portal. If you cannot complete the request online, send the required documents to the Board office. You can pay either through the "Make a Payment" link in the top menu, or by mailing a check or money order to the Board.

NOTE: A Registered Landscape Architect with lapsed registration is not authorized to practice landscape architecture in Oregon.

IMPORTANT - Expiration of registration

After 5 consecutive years of non-renewal, inactive status, or inactive emeritus status, a registration is considered expired and can no longer be reinstated or reactivated to active status. If you are past the 5-year deadline and need an Oregon registration, you must apply as a new applicant and meet the current registration requirements for education, exam, and experience. Per law, the Board cannot grant any exceptions to this 5-year limit.
