New Licensee Information

Please review this information carefully- it contains important details about your new license.  Following is only a summary overview of the current requirements.

Keep Contact Info Updated

Any change in contact information (including email address) must updated within thirty days.  Log into the Licensee Portal using the same credentials as you established with the Applicant Portal to make the needed changes.  Be sure to add our listserv (oblpctenews@omls.oregon.gov) to your email “safe list” to ensure you receive notifications and information from the Board.

Renewal

The Board will email you courtesy reminders that your license renewal is coming due; however, it is your responsibility to renew on time.  Your renewal is due by the last day of your birth month.  If you renew after that date, but within 30 days of the due date, you will owe a delinquent fee.  If you do not renew within the 30-day grace period, your license will expire and you will be required to reapply to become licensed again.  We recommend that you set calendar alerts to avoid this situation, as we cannot waive the consequences of an expired license.  Practicing after the license is expired may constitute unlicensed practice, which could result in Board sanction including civil penalty and license revocation or denial of the re-licensure application.

Custodian of Record

OAR 833-075-0080 mandates that all licensees (LPCs and LMFTs) and registered interns must notify the Board of a Custodian of Record who will take care of client files and referrals in the case of death or incapacity of the licensee/intern.

Introduction to Continuing Education (CE) Regular Requirements

LPCs and LMFTs must complete at least 40 clock hours of Continuing Education (CE) during each 24-month reporting period, which must include:
  • 6 clock hours clock hours of training in professional ethics and/or Oregon State laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of professional counseling or marriage and family therapy;
  • 4 clock hours of training in cultural competency; and
  • For licensees who supervise registered interns, including all licensees on the Supervisor Registry, 3 clock hours of supervision-related training.
The Board's Administrative Rules (OAR Ch. 833, Div. 80) provide more detail.

Your CE "reporting period" is the 24-month period preceding the expiration date of your license in even-numbered years. For example, if your birth month is June, your CE reporting period would be from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2020.  You would report when you renew your license in June 2020. If you received your initial license less than 12 months before CE is due, then no CE is due. If you received your initial license between 12 and 23 months before CE is due, then 20 clock hours of CE is due. For example, if your birth month is September and you are initially licensed in August 2019, then you would report a minimum of 20 total clock hours of CE, including 3 hours of ethics and 2 hours of cultural competency when you renew in September 2020.

Temporary CE Requirements (2020 CE Extension for COVID-19)

The Board has granted a temporary CE extension in response to the novel coronavirus emergency.  There is no CE reporting or auditing in the year 2020.  CE will instead be reported and audited in 2022.
