Produce Safety Program

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established minimum standards for safe growing, harvesting, packing and holding of produce grown for human consumption as part of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Under a grant agreement with the FDA, Oregon's Produce Safety Program works to promote understanding of the Produce Safety Rule's regulatory requirements for Oregon farmers by providing support and resources. We are a non-regulatory program in Oregon.

The produce safety team offers the following resources for Oregon’s operations:

  • Outreach and education
  • Technical assistance
  • Developing an inventory of covered farms in Oregon

The videos below are demonstrations of how a farm may discuss the different aspects of the produce safety rule (worker training, agricultural water, domestic and wild animals, biological soil amendments of animal origin, equipment cleaning and sanitation). These videos were filmed as part of a demonstration of technical assistance (On Farm Readiness Review). ODA has limited ability to provide this service in 2025 due to budget reductions.
