ODOT leads stormwater runoff 6PPD-quinone research

Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Pooled Fund Program allows state departments of transportation to pool their resources and expertise to tackle important transportation issues collaboratively.

ODOT is leading a TPF research project about managing 6PPD-quinone in stormwater runoff – “Stormwater management to address highway runoff toxicity due to 6PPD-quinone from tire rubber.”

When tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD encounters ozone in the air, 6PPD-quinone is produced. This research study aims to give DOTs a targeted and cost-effective approach for effectively managing this toxic chemical in highway runoff.

Eight DOTs are contributing to this study, slated to kick off in August 2024 with a solicitation for researchers.

The Stormwater Technology Testing Center

Stormwater Technology Testing Center
The Stormwater Technology Testing Center (STTC) in Portland, Oregon, is a facility that tests new stormwater treatment technologies. It checks how well these technologies remove pollutants, their maintenance needs, and their long-term costs.

The STTC was built by ODOT with help from interested parties in Oregon and Washington. In 2023, the center started full-scale testing of proprietary technologies. For more information on how to test your product at the STTC or to get test results, visit the visit the STTC website.
