Commercial Structures Code Program

BCD Technical Bulletin

July 2020 - Tenant improvements - Repair, alteration, change of occupancy - OSSC
Various interior improvements of existing tenant spaces require some level of local building department oversight. There are several minor cosmetic finish and repair considerations of existing buildings that are exempt from building department regulation. This BCD Technical Bulletin highlights the code considerations associated with improving existing tenant spaces.

Adopted structural codes and standards

The Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC) establishes the minimum requirements for the construction, reconstruction, alteration and repair of buildings and other structures, as well as the installation of mechanical devices and equipment. The division works with building officials, technical committees, advisory boards, and the public to adopt, amend, and interpret the provisions of the OSSC.

2019 Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC)
Effective Oct. 1, 2019

The 2019 OSSC is based on the 2018 International Building Code (IBC).
The provisions for existing buildings in Chapter 34 are based on the 2018 International Existing Building Code (IEBC).

The 2019 OSSC includes portions of the 2018 International Fire Code (IFC). Access the IFC section reference guide.
