Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC) class

Class description

The Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC) class is designed for individuals who are new to the building industry and seeking employment in Oregon as an inspector. The class explains the roles and responsibilities of building officials, inspectors, and plans examiners. Unless otherwise stated in OAR 918-098-1010, every person who performs building official duties, building code inspections, or plan reviews must possess a valid OIC.

• This course is offered monthly for individuals who meet any one of the prerequisites listed below
  
• Course materials are provided by the division
  
• OIC will be issued within one week of successfully passing the exam

Registration

1. If you meet one of the prerequisites, contact training staff for available dates and to register.
2. Once eligibility is confirmed, training staff will send you an invitation to register for available courses via email.
3. Once registration is completed, we will send you an automatically generated e-mail explaining  payment options.
4. Once a signed registration application is on file with the division, you will be e-mailed the instructional video and course materials no later than two weeks before the beginning of class. You must view the video before the first day of class.

• Once the registration process is complete you will receive a series of emails, including a course approval, link to the class video, and class login information (sent two days before class date)
  

• Class is approximately 3 hours and begins at 8:30 A.M. It includes a 60-90 minute question and answer session with instructors, a class survey, and 60 minutes for the exam.
  
• Passing score of 75% or higher is required for successful completion and certification issuance. Failed examination requires the class to be taken again i.e. application with fee, registration and exam.
• If an applicant fails to take the Oregon Inspector Certification exam within 60 days of being approved, the application is considered withdrawn and the applicant must re-apply with a new application fee and exam. (see OAR 918-098-1025). If a national certification conversion, electrical or plumbing inspector exam application was approved pending the completion of the OIC class, that application will be considered withdrawn and the applicant must re-apply.
  
• Applicants approved to take a state electrical or plumbing exam can expect the process to take a minimum of six weeks from the time of application to taking the state inspector exam.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for this class you must meet one of the following qualifications:

• Have been pre-approved to take an Oregon state electrical or plumbing inspector exam;
  
• Have been hired by a municipality building department;
• Have national certifications to convert; (Submit Application)
  
• Hold an expired OIC, or are otherwise required by the division to take the class; or
• Have registered for an electrical, plumbing, or structural certification course and understand this class is part of the certification requirement.
