Catalog of approved residential continuing education classes

Residential contractors:

You are required to take 3 hours of CCB laws, regulations and business practices classes, PLUS:

  • 5 hours of other approved courses (see catalog) below) if you have been licensed by the CCB six or more years, OR
  • 13 hours of other approved courses (see catalog below) if you have been licensed by the CCB less than six years
Course completion certificates:
Send course completion certificates (include CCB license number in subject line) to cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov

Home Inspectors: 

Home inspectors must perform continuing education specific for their license. If you are a home inspector, see the Home Inspectors link below to find classes.

CCB-3 Hour laws, regulations and business practices classes

In addition to 5 or 13 hours of other provider approved courses, residential contractors are required to take 3 hours of CCB laws, regulations and business practices (LRB) classes.Residential contractors only need to take this class one time every two years to renew their license. Residential contractors will not receive additional credits for taking the class more than once. Classes can be taken on-demand through your online services account, in a live webinar, or in live in-person.

For contractors who have limited access to Internet: CCB will work with all contractors who are unable to fulfill their 3-hour class requirement online. Please contact the CCB education section at 503-934-2227.

    Do I need lead certification courses?

    If you disturb painted surfaces on homes built before 1978, you probably need to be certified as lead-safe. This is a two-step process.
    1. Take an eight-hour certification course approved by the Oregon Health Authority. The certification is good for five years and tells us you completed training in how to handle lead-based paint safely. 
    2. Obtain a Lead-Based Paint Renovator's License (LBPR) from the CCB. This license costs $50 annually.
    Your initial lead training expires after five years. You must take a "refresher" course before that happens to keep your CCB license in good standing. 
    • Refresher courses are approved by the Oregon Health Authority and the EPA and are good for three years or five years, depending on whether you take the class in-person or online.

    CCB continuing education credit for lead courses (New!)

    All contractors now earn CCB continuing education credit for taking the lead-safe classes.
    • Any government-approved eight-hour certification course or four-hour refresher course can count for your three CCB laws, regulations and business practices credits or for credit hours of other approved courses.

    How do contractors get credit?

    The CCB applies credits when you present your lead training certificate to obtain or maintain your CCB lead license.

    Accredited colleges/universities/trade schools


    The CCB accepts credits from accredited colleges and universities, as well as trade schools, if:

    • The courses pertain to your business practices or your trade. Approved topic areas: Construction business practices, building codes, safety, bidding, estimating, accounting, marketing, construction law, customer service, energy, your trade and environmental hazards. ​
    • Courses are at least an hour in length.
    • You provide the CCB with a course completion certificate or transcript that includes the name of the course, when you completed the course and its length.


    Colleges include your local community college and Small Business Development Center as well as the Northwest College of Construction.​

    Government agencies

    The CCB awards continuing education credit for courses offered by U.S. government agencies (state, federal and local) even though these courses may not be listed in the Coures Catalog.
    The courses must:

    • Be at least an hour in length.
    • Pertain to the business or trade aspects of your contracting work.
    • Provide you with a course completion certificate that shows the length of the course and the date of completion.

    OSHA programs that improve safety now count for CCB continuing education

    Oregon OSHA consultation services are free and confidential. Consultants in workplace safety, industrial hygiene and ergonomics can help you reduce accidents and related costs, and help you develop a comprehensive program to manage safety and health. You will receive a report listing the hazards identified along with Oregon OSHA recommendations for corrections.

    And now you can satisfy all or part of your CCB continuing education credits when:

    • You receive an Oregon OSHA consultation AND
    • Provide proof that you corrected any  hazards that were identified.

    ​

    Specific consultation - 3 hours of CE

    What: This is targeted consultation that covers a particular job or an aspect of a job to help you identify and correct hazards - fall protection, for example.
    Credit: Earn 3 hours of CCB laws, regulations and business practices credit or credit toward other required hours once you receive the Oregon OSHA safety or health consultation and correct any hazards.
    What to do: Request a specific consultation through the Oregon OSHA office nearest you. Indicate you want to participate in the CCB Safety Improvement CEU Program. Once the consultation is complete and you correct any hazards, Oregon OSHA will issue you a letter of substantial compliance. Email the letter to the CCB at cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov. Include your CCB license number. ​


    ​Comprehensive consultation - 5 hours of CE

    What: This consultation not only covers a worksite visit but will evaluate the overall safety program - everything from injury and illness records and written programs to safety meetings or safety committee operations.
    Credit:  Earn 5 hours of credit that can be applied to your CCB laws, regulations and business practices requirement or to other required hours. Credit is applied once you receive a consultation and correct all hazards identified.
    What to do: Request a comprehensive consultation through the Oregon OSHA field office nearest you. ​Indicate you want to participate in the CCB Safety Improvement CEU Program. Once the consultation is complete and you correct any hazards, Oregon OSHA will issue you a letter of substantial compliance. Email that to the CCB at cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov​. Include your CCB license number. ​ 


    Challenge Program - 8 or 16 hours of CE

    What: Participants undergo a series of safety consultations and work with OSHA over a period of one year to correct hazards and develop programs to become self-reliant in safety.
    Credit: Satisfy all your CCB requirements (8 or 16 hours) if you are accepted into and complete the program.  
    What to do: Contact the Oregon OSHA field office nearest you to apply for the program. Once the year-long program is completed, Oregon OSHA will mail you a certificate of completion. Email this to the CCB at cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov​​. Include your CCB license number. ​

    Accredited colleges and universities, as well as federal, state or local government agencies, are all approved to offer continuing education to home inspectors.
     
    These courses can also help you obtain the qualifying points you need as part of your application to become a home inspector in Oregon. In some cases, education is provided at association meetings.

    Some of the organizations on this list may additionally prepare people for the National Home Inspector Examination. However, the CCB does not review or approve curriculums for the national exam.
