Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis and may be canceled if minimum class size is not met. There are three levels of truck inspections, each with specific training and certification requirements.
Level III Inspection
A Level III inspection is a 13-step process that focuses on driver credentials, including qualifications and hours of service.
Requirements:
- Complete and pass North American Standard Inspection (NASI) Part A.
- After passing the course, complete 32 coached inspections within 6 months.
- Once certified, complete 32 inspections annually.
- Inspection year runs October 1 – September 30.
- First year is pro-rated.
- Best suited for officers who patrol main highways and stop commercial vehicles for speeding, lane violations or other traffic offenses.
Level II Inspection
A Level II inspection includes an inspection of the driver and the exterior of the vehicle.
Requirements:
- Complete and pass NASI Part A and NASI Part B.
- Complete 32 coached inspections within 6 months.
- Maintain certification by completing 32 inspections annually.
- October 1 – September 30.
- First year is pro-rated.
Level I Inspection
A Level I inspection is the most comprehensive, covering the driver, exterior of the vehicle, and all components underneath the truck.
These inspections require additional space and are typically conducted at weigh stations, where traffic can be safely controlled.
Requirements:
- Complete and pass NASI Part A and NASI Part B.
- Complete 32 coached inspections within 6 months.
- Maintain certification by completing 32 inspections annually.
- October 1 – September 30.
- First year is pro-rated.
- Best suited for enforcement and safety that work at the various weigh stations or Police Officers who Reconstruct and investigate accidents.
2026 Class Descriptions and Schedules
North American Standard Part A – Level III Course
The number one cause of accidents in the State of Oregon is driver error. This course focuses on the level III portion of a level I course. For Troopers and Officers who are primarily stationed on the major highways that pass through Oregon and only want to focus on driver violations (Speeding, log book, CDL issues). For inspectors who want to be level I or II certified must take this class prior to taking the Part B level I/II class. There is no fee for the class and you must be a State or Federal Employee.

North American Standard Level 1 and 2 – Part B
This is the second week of a two-week course. In order to receive Level 1 or Level II inspector certification, an individual must take both weeks; Part A (level III) and Part B. This class focuses on the mechanical part of the level I and level II inspection. This class is for the individual who's required to be level I or II certified based upon their position or an Officer who really likes truck inspections or is part of a truck team. This class is only for State and Federal employees and there is no cost.

North American Standard Hazmat and Passenger Vehicle Courses
Additional North American Standard courses are available, including Hazmat, Cargo Tank, Other Bulk, and Passenger Vehicles. Before enrolling in any of these courses, you must be certified as a Level I or Level II Inspector.
If a course is offered
in Oregon, you may register directly through the
Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) training website. If the course is offered
out of state or online, you must first obtain approval from the State Point of Contact, Abe Dunivin. Abe will coordinate with the hosting state to confirm that you are certified and authorized to attend.

Extensions
There may be circumstances in which an inspector is unable to obtain or maintain certification numbers during the fiscal year (October 1 through September 30). If certification could not be maintained due to illness, injury, or other special circumstances, please contact Training Coordinator
