  • Denturists Required to Provide Information and Informed Consent for Teeth Whitening

During the 2011 Legislative Session HB 2145 passed allowing denturists to manufacture non-orthodontic devices. Due to concerns received from stakeholders regarding potential dangers of using caustic teeth-whitening gels without a prescription, the Health Licensing Office (HLO) and the Oregon Board of Dentistry developed informed consent materials.

As of July 1, 2013 if a denturist constructs repairs, relines, reproduces, duplicates, supplies, fits or alters a teeth whitening tray for a patient the denturist must provide the patient with agency prescribed written and verbal information related to teeth whitening trays and teeth whitening solutions including the procedure, alternatives, risks and questions. The denturist must obtain informed consent from the patient and retain the a copy of the consent in the patient file.

  • Board Adopts Practice Clarification on Non-Orthodontic Dental Appliances
Based on findings from the Non-orthodontic Appliances Workgroup that met on April 29, 2013, the Board of Denture Technology has adopted a "Practice Clarification" to clarify the role of the denturist in assisting consumers, and when denturists should refer the denturist patient to a physician.

The board adopted the Practice Clarification at its September 9, 2013, regular board meeting.

The workgroup was established and Practice Clarification adopted due to concerns received from stakeholders regarding potential issues of licensed denturists treating sleep apnea, temporomandibular disorders and other medical conditions.
