Vehicles are the #1 source of air pollution. While not always visible, every combustion engine emits pollutants such as smog, carbon monoxide, air toxics and greenhouse gasses. To minimize air pollution:
- EPA ensures vehicles are initially built with state-of-the art emission control systems so their air pollution does not exceed standards for each manufactured make and model.
- State VIP programs like Oregon DEQ’s help ensure vehicles are properly maintained so the emission control system keeps pollution levels within EPA’s allowable standards over the life of the vehicle. In Oregon, a vehicle emissions test is required prior to DMV registration in the Portland-Metro and Medford-Ashland areas. Typically this is every two years.
