We work at 84 weigh stations across the state to make sure commercial trucks stay within size and weight limits. We weigh millions of trucks each year. We also inspect trucks to make sure they are safe and operating correctly.
We show excellence by making it as easy as possible for trucking companies to understand and follow the rules. Customer service and effective communication are very important to us, because we know how important commercial trucking is to Oregon's economy. We work hard to keep freight moving safely on our highway system.
We like to employ problem solvers, strong communicators and those with customer service and leadership skills. Many of our employees have experience helping people follow rules and laws. Many others have experience interpreting state laws and regulations. Degrees in business administration, social science or finance are helpful when working in our unit.
Highway safety is our top priority. We make sure that trucks and buses are running safely, truck drivers are qualified and fit to drive, cargo is secure, and hazardous materials are being shipped appropriately. Our safety specialists inspect trucks and buses and make sure that trucking companies are abiding by rules and laws. They also help law enforcement officers investigate truck crashes and train them on how to perform inspections.
We also manage the Green Light Preclearance Program which allows trucks to get weighed as they go so they can travel through Oregon without stopping. This eliminates hours of delay and significant expense for the trucking industry, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
We ensure safety by inspecting trucks and buses to make sure they are running safely. We also show excellence through our Green Light Program, which helps trucking companies be more efficient.
Our employees may have degrees in business or public administration and/or experience compiling and evaluating facts.
We are detail-oriented people who make sure that tax reports and payments from trucking companies are correct. Our employees screen over 30,000 accounts per year and conduct audits of trucking companies operating on public highways in Oregon.
We also work with the approximately 130 moving companies in Oregon to make sure that they are providing good services at fair prices, and make sure that their workers pass criminal background checks. In order to protect our fellow Oregonians, we conduct outreach to educate people about the dangers of using illegal movers.
The work we do ensures safety for those who use moving companies in Oregon. Our auditors show excellence by being experts in their field.
We often hire those with research experience. Our employees often have degrees in business or public administration.
We handle commercial vehicle registration tasks such as issuing and renewing truck license plates, collecting road use taxes and truck registration fees, ensuring that intrastate truckers have the proper insurance, and helping more than 4,500 Oregon-based truckers operate in other states and Canada.
We also issue permits for oversize, overweight or unusual truckloads and give drivers routing instructions for safe operations. Our work keeps the trucking industry informed about highway construction and maintenance projects and clearances for freight loads.
