Intersection Safety

Aerial view of intersection in SalemUsing crash data from the 2010 Roadway Departure Safety Implementation Plan, the Oregon Department of Transportation engaged the Federal Highway Administration to develop a plan for reducing intersection crashes.

The resulting plan focuses of reducing fatal and major injury crashes that occur at intersections.

  • Intersection crashes account for approximately 15 percent of all fatalities on Oregon roadways.
  • On average, 72 fatalities related to intersection crashes occur annually.

Making Changes

Using cost-effective strategies to apply systemic improvements, as well as hot spot improvements can be used to reach an approximately 13 percent reduction in intersection fatalities.

An evaluation of intersections statewide was conducted resulting in an inventory of intersections that could be improved with low cost countermeasures to reduce crashes.
