Examination Schedule

Practical Examination

The state-prepared practical examination is used to determine the qualification, fitness and ability of an applicant to practice as a hearing aid specialist. The practical examination consists of four sections: audiometric testing, masking, ear-mold impressions and fitting hearing aids.

Application requirements must be received at HLO 30 days prior to the scheduled practical examination date. The exam is given quarterly and by appointment only.

Oregon Laws and Rules Examination

The Oregon Laws and Rules Examination covers regulations, for hearing aid specialists listed within Oregon Administrative Rules Chapter 331, Division 601. The examination consists of 20 multiple-choice questions; the time limit of the examination is 30 minutes, and passing the examination requires a score of 70 percent.


The Oregon Laws and Rules Examination may be taken on a walk-in basis 9 a.m-2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at HLO.

International Hearing Society (IHS), International Licensing Examination (ILE)

The examination is separated into 10 competency areas based on knowledge, skills and abilities required of a hearing aid specialist. The examination consists of 80 scored and 25 non-scored (pilot) practice/scenario-based, multiple-choice test questions. The ILE is offered at authorized testing centers located througout Oregon. Applicants must obtain authorization from HLO to proceed with registration through IHS to sit for the ILE examination.
