Radon Gas and Public Health

Test your home. Protect your health

The Oregon Radon Awareness Program educates the public on health hazards of radon gas, promotes radon testing and mitigation, and encourages radon-resistant new construction throughout the state.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Radon is found everywhere in the world. The natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water produces radon. Exposure to high radon levels over a long period of time can increase your risk of lung cancer. Testing your home for radon is easy, and the first step to reducing potentially high radon exposure.

2026 Northwest Radon Poster Contest

January is Radon Action Month. This poster contest serves to raise awareness of harmful effects of elevated indoor radon levels and promote testing and mitigation of radon gas. Regional first, second, and third place winners will win cash prizes. Student Alexia Vallo's poster placed 1st in Oregon and 2nd nationally in 2024 (below).
