Pesticides and PARC

For the purpose of pesticide regulation, the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) considers cannabis grown in Oregon to be an agricultural crop. The term cannabis includes industrial hemp, and both recreational and medicinal marijuana.

Updates on pesticide products and cannabis

The six neem oil products currently under the statewide Stop Sale, Use, or Removal Orders (SSUROs) advisories, initially announced June 20, 2019, and amended June 24, 2019, are for specific lot numbers. See the amended advisories for details.

Guide list for pesticides and cannabis (products allowed in production of cannabis)

The guide list for pesticides and cannabis was updated February 2, 2023, and is sorted by active ingredient then product name. The intent of the list is to assist growers in distinguishing those pesticide products whose labels do not legally prohibit use on cannabis from those that clearly do not allow use. The list is not an endorsement or recommendation to use these products in the production of cannabis in Oregon. Do not hesitate to contact Pesticide staff with questions or for label clarification.

The ODA Pesticides Program conducts monthly reviews of pesticide labels to determine their eligibility for the Cannabis Guide List. If you do not see a pesticide label on the list, but feel as though it would qualify, please notify us at (503) 986-4635, and we will review it at the next label review meeting.

Alert regarding the use of Marrone Bio Innovation's Grandevo (EPA Reg. No. 84059-17)

Effective Sept. 18, 2019, Marrone Bio Innovation’s Grandevo, (EPA Reg. No. 84059-17), has been taken off the Cannabis Guide List because the currently registered product label language does not meet the criteria utilized for pesticide products to be eligible for the List. It is no longer allowed for use on cannabis crops. However, two other Grandevo products on the list are still okay to use on cannabis crops, and as always, the user must follow label directions. These products are listed below:

  • Grandevo CG (EPA Reg. No. 84059-27) (no aerial application allowed)
  • Grandevo PTO (EPA Reg. No. 84059-17)

Alert regarding the use of pyrethrins and/or piperonyl butoxide

  • Recent laboratory results show high levels of the active ingredients, pyrethrins and/or piperonyl butoxide in some cannabis samples.

  • Both pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide currently are on ODA's "Guide List for Pesticides and Cannabis."

  • ODA is investigating why some samples indicate levels of one or both of these pesticides, which far exceed the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Action Levels, and yet others do not.

  • To retain the listing of these two pesticides on the Guidelist, ODA, OHA, and Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC) need to learn more about what influences pesticide residue levels on cannabis. If you used pyrethrins and/or piperonyl butoxide, and your cannabis tested below OHA’s Action level, please contact ODA at (503) 986-4553.

  • Find out the differences between pyrethrins and pyrethroids
