Overview
People with disabilities have a right to seek out camping, picnicking, and other recreational opportunities within Oregon State Parks with the same expectation to participate as those without disabilities. Under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it is the responsibility of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) to ensure that all services, programs, and activities are readily accessible and usable by individuals with disabilities.
Purpose
OPRD has drafted an ADA Transition Plan to guide the agency in removing identified barriers to access over the next 25 years. As part of this process, the ADA coordinator and park rangers trained in site evaluation surveyed 277 unique facilities and identified 5,078 individual barriers, ranging from inaccessible picnic areas and restroom facilities to parking lots with limited accessible parking. Identified barriers were grouped into categories defined by level of complexity to help OPRD prioritize remediation. The draft Transition Plan documents this process and presents a timeline for completing improvements to remove barriers.
Next Steps
Now that we have heard from the public, we will incorperate responses into a final version of the ADA Transition Plan that will be made available to the public at OPRD's Accessinility and Inclusion website.
