Education

students at graduation

William P. Lord High School is a fully accredited high school providing youth with access and opportunity to complete their diploma, GED, and/or vocational preparation while at MacLaren. Every youth at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility who has not completed a high school diploma or equivalency attends school 5 days a week, 12 months a year. Lord is staffed in collaboration with teachers, educational specialists, and administration from Willamette Education Service District.

In addition to high school courses, Lord serves youth working through middle school classes and supports youth working toward their GED. Lord has a comprehensive CTE program in the Industrial Arts and houses the College Center and Barbering program within its campus.

Lord High School staff believes that education is essential to reducing recidivism and increasing independence and success for the youth we serve. We teach content and impart knowledge, but our core beliefs and values - in the power of Respect, Relationships, Resilience, Responsibility, Recognition, and Repair - is how we build, and hopefully sustain, a culture of learning here and beyond our walls.

The College Lab at Lord High School offers both online and in-person college courses for high school graduates. Youth have access to pre-college coursework through WESD staff and ASPIRE volunteers where they can file for financial aid, complete entry requirements, and receive guidance on all aspects of the college experience. Youth enroll on a tiered access basis, with increasing choices, access, and rigor as they navigate their first terms of college.

Youth at MacLaren have earned Associates and Bachelors degrees, Technical certifications, and even received Masters degrees while in the program.

Lord High School offers all youth at MacLaren opportunities to gain Career and Technical Education, Industry Certification, Professional Licensing, and College and Career preparation. Youth can enroll in stand-alone certifications which are taught by industry partners, as well as program-based certifications which are taught by LHS staff and certified by industry partners.

Our Stand-Alone Certifications include Forklift, Flagging, Pallet Jack First Aid/CPR, Food Handlers, Warehouse Training, OSHA10, Bring Your A Game, and more!

Our Vocational Training Programs include Welding and Industrial Arts, Automotive, Computer Aided Design, Woodworking, and Barbering.

Youth who are interested in vocational opportunities at MacLaren are encouraged to enroll in vocational training and certifications. Many of the vocational opportunities at the facility require licensing or training prior to obtaining a job.
