Nutritional Analysis Software

Using analysis software to determine nutrient values for your menu items is an acceptable method determined by the Menu Labeling Act. Getting accurate nutrient values with analysis software is dependent on training and knowledge about food preparation methods and ingredients.


Things to look for in Nutritional Analysis Software

  • Ensure the analysis software is based on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. This can be done by calling the software company or researching the software.
  • Ensure that the analysis software is based on the most current edition of the USDA National Nutrient Database. Each year the USDA updates its database, the 2009 edition is SR22.
  • Ask to see a listing of what nutrients can be tracked to ensure you can get all the information you will need from the software.
  • Ensure that the analysis software allows you to update the information regularly. Most software companies update their software yearly.

Nutritional analysis using laboratory analysis is an approved method for providing nutrition menu labeling information.

In order to ensure accurate nutrient values for your menu items, it may be helpful to have someone knowledgeable in food science and trained in nutrition to conduct the nutritional analysis. Registered Dietitians and Registered Dietetic Technicians are examples of trained professionals available to provide this service.
