History Center Photos - Tunnels
This page is devoted to historical photographs of Tunnels in Oregon. This is just a sampling of the many photographs in the History Center.
Historical records, correspondence and photographs dating back to the late 1800's are stored at the ODOT History Center in Room 5 of the Transportation Building in Salem, Oregon.

The documents in the History Center are public records and open to inspection, as well as being available to copy.  The History Center has space available for old records, including photographs, which are not being used in daily work.  If you have any questions about the center, contact Pat Solomon, Archivist at (503) 986-3284 or FAX (503) 986-4025.

Built in 1932 at milepost 178.42 on U.S. 101, near Heceta Head (Devils Elbow), Lane County.  Built by U.S. Bureau of Public Roads.
Length:  714 feet
Vertical Clearance:  16 feet
Horizontal Clear
Lining:  Concrete, open rock for about 1/3
Portals:  Concrete (Sunburst design)

Deschutes Tunnel 14 miles East of The Dalles, North Portal, Columbia River Hwy, Wasco County, 1929 - 1932. No longer in existence

Mitchell Point Tunnel

Mitchell Point Tunnel
Columbia River Highway, Hood River County, located on the original Columbia River Highway and engineered by John Arthur Elliott in 1915. Blasted through a basalt headland, Mitchell Point Tunnel featured five windows overlooking the river and was patterned after a tunnel in Switzerland. Mitchell Point Tunnel served on the Columbia River Highway until 1953, when a new two-lane water-level route along the river bypassed the old road. In 1966, the tunnel was removed with explosives and machinery during widening of the new highway to a four-lane freeway configuration.

Mosier Tunnel

Mosier Tunnel, 1921
Built in 1921 near milepost 68 on the Columbia River Historic Highway in Wasco County.  Its timber construction has been replaced with concrete.  It is open for pedestrians and bicyclists but not motorists.
