Equivocal Influenza PCR Subtyping Results

If a BioFire FilmArray Respiratory Panel or an eSensor XT8 Respiratory Viral Panel tests positive for Flu A, but negative for H1, H3 and H1-2009, this is considered an equivocal result. Proceed as follows:

Step 1

Retest the sample to verify. If the result is the same, proceed to Step 2. If the result is different, test a third time. If the repeated tests agree and give a clear result, no further action is necessary. If results are inconsistent on the repeated tests, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2

Submit the sample to the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory for confirmatory testing. If OSPHL is unable to subtype the sample, they will submit to CDC for further characterization. If OSPHL is able to subtype the sample, proceed with troubleshooting the reagents or instrument as described in the package insert for the instrument in question.
