Oregon Schools Seismic Status Reports

New for 2020
To streamline data collection, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) now collects data on seismic upgrades to buildings as part of other district reporting to ODE. ODE will provide seismic status data to DOGAMI.

Oregon law requires school districts and education service districts to provide DOGAMI with notice of construction projects that may affect a school’s seismic risk. Oregon school districts report annually on construction of new buildings and modification of existing buildings. Status reports are due by September 30, and are posted along with the results of the original 2007 Statewide Seismic Needs Assessment. Reports include information on all structures replaced or modified. If no projects took place, that is noted as well.

*Why weren't some school districts included in the 2007 DOGAMI evaluation?
According to the full seismic report, section 2.1: Qualifying Buildings: K-12 Public Schools and Education Service Districts (ESD): "In the absence of a data set containing capacity information, DOGAMI used the Oregon Department of Education’s 2005-06 schools enrollment database to determine the qualifying schools sites. Initially, we selected an enrollment of 200 as the cutoff; we then increased the number of schools assessed by employing two additional rules:

  • at least 90% of each county’s enrolled students must be included
  • 100% of public schools potentially at risk of tsunami inundation must be included

All 1,030 schools in the state with an enrollment of 154 or higher, along with 71 schools with enrollments ranging from 8 to 153, were included. The process resulted in the inclusion of nearly 97% of all enrolled K-12 students. 171 school districts had at least one school included; 39 school districts had no schools included. Only one Education Service District (ESD) school was included. Three schools administered by the Department of Education were included." See the full seismic report for more information.
