About Us

The Oregon Asthma Program (OAP) is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2000 and is a recognized leader in the development of a public health approach to asthma.

The OAP is extremely successful in bringing diverse partners together to raise awareness about asthma, share data and develop interventions to reduce the burden of the disease on Oregonians.

The OAP’s efforts to date have been successful, with both the asthma hospitalization and mortality rates dropping since the start of the program. Oregon was ranked best in the nation in 2009 by the Commonwealth Fund for reducing avoidable asthma hospitalizations among children.

  • Leading the consensus process with health insurance plans to develop population-based indicators and measurements of quality for asthma care.
  • Selection of asthma as the performance improvement project in the Oregon Health Plan from from 2007 to 2010.
  • Developing the award-winning Oregon Asthma Resource Bank (OARB), a web-based resource that contains free, ready-to-print, easy-to-read, clinically accurate asthma materials.

The OAP continues its commitment to the people of Oregon and the nation by improving the quality of life of people with asthma. This commitment includes:

  • Continuing efforts to provide information on the burden of asthma
  • Mobilizing community members
  • Providing educational materials
  • Developing policies and plans to help community and statewide health efforts
  • Implementing and communicating policies, laws, and regulations that protect health and assure the safety of Oregonians with asthma

Improve the quality of life for Oregonians with asthma so that all people in Oregon live, work, play and learn in communities that support health and optimal quality of life.

Advance policies, environments and systems that promote health through the prevention and management of asthma and other chronic diseases.

The Oregon Asthma Program is part of the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Section in the Center for Prevention and Health Promotion. Search the Public Health Program Directory to see all programs in the Oregon Public Health Division.
