About Grief

Grief is an internal, emotional response to loss of something or someone held dear. It is a process that will likely be at play for a long time. Grief response is highly individualized; however, intense and continued symptoms beyond six months to one year that interfere with one's ability to function and enjoy life should be evaluated by a mental health professional.
Parental grief from the death of a child may be the most intense and overwhelming type of grief. (8) Several resources exist to help home visitors better understand grief and the grieving process in order to assist them in providing compassionate care after death or other adverse event.
