Oregon Birth Data

Vital statistics are the compilation and analysis of information collected from vital event records reported in Oregon. Oregon's Center for Health Statistics is responsible for compiling and analyzing the data from these vital records.
Some of the most important information about the health of Oregonians comes from vital records, such as leading causes of death, low birth weight babies, and mother's access to prenatal care. Vital records data are used throughout the state and nation for analysis of health trends, program planning, and policy development.

Updated February 5, 2026

Oregon State law requires records to be completed for all live births. These birth records are the primary data sources for health information shown on these pages.

Preliminary Birth Data

Preliminary data are undergoing quality assurance and editing procedures that can result in frequent and significant changes. Data can be used for tracking recent health events, but are not appropriate for use in statistical analyses. Final birth data is shown in the next section below.

About Birth Data

The Center for Health Statistics registers only those vital events occurring in Oregon. However, information on births occurring out-of-state to Oregon residents is also reported through an interstate exchange agreement. Data may be tabulated by residence (where the person lived) or by occurrence (where the event occurred).

How to Interpret Data

Preliminary data for births, deaths, fetal deaths, and induced abortions are undergoing editing procedures which result in frequent and significant changes. Please use caution when interpreting these data. Data can be used for tracking recent health events, but are not appropriate for use in statistical analyses.

A limited number of summary tables are available. Birth, death, and fetal death tables show events to Oregon residents. Abortion tables include out-of-state residents who obtained abortion services in Oregon, but do not include Oregonians who may have obtained abortions elsewhere.

The data include all registered records as of the run date shown on the table. It does not include records received but not yet processed by the Center for Health Statistics.

Border counties will have less complete data because some of their residents experience the vital event outside of Oregon. Out-of-state records are received by the Center for Health Statistics much later than in-state records.

Final Birth Data

Updated September 11, 2025

These tables and data files show the number of births that occurred to Oregon residents of all ages by the mother´s county of residence and the ZIP code reported on the birth certificate. This information is often used for population planning, estimates of future school enrollments, and estimates of other services geared toward children and expanding families.

Note: These tables include births by county of residence and ZIP code reported on the birth certificate. ZIP code data are not edited. If ZIP codes listed in a particular county table are not from that county, the births should be considered unknown or missing for ZIP code information.

In 2011 the Oregon Legislature passed House Bill 2380, which required the Oregon Public Health Division to:

  1. Add two questions to the Oregon Birth Certificate to determine planned place of birth and birth attendant, and

  2. Report annually on birth outcomes, including death, by location and attendant type. These data are available as part of the Center for Health Statistics' Annual Report.

In addition, the Oregon Public Health Division has produced two special reports on birth outcomes for infants intended to deliver out of hospital.
