The Water Sampling Process

OHA relies on water sampling data provided by our partners.

OHA uses water quality data from federal, state, and local partners to inform cyanoHAB recreational use advisories. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) carries out regular cyanoHAB toxin monitoring during the cyanoHAB season. Sampling by other partners may not be at regular intervals, but can still be used to understand water quality conditions.

DEQ CyanoHAB Recreational Monitoring Sites

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) performs seasonal CyanoHAB monitoring at a handful of sites in Oregon. DEQ samples each site 3-4 times throughout the cyanoHABs season, typically May - September. Waterbodies are tested for cyanotoxins including microcystin, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a and saxitoxin. Click here to view a list of monitoring sites and the seasonal sampling schedule.

Building CyanoHAB Monitoring Capacity
OHA encourages partners to sample and submit water quality data. However, to inform OHA's advisory process, samples must be taken following certain specifications. For technical assistance starting a cyanoHAB toxin sampling program, contact us at hab.health@odhsoha.oregon.gov.
