About Us

The Oregon Board of Pharmacy was created by the Oregon State Legislature in 1891. Today, the board consists of nine board members, five members are licensed Pharmacists, two are licensed Pharmacy Technicians and two are representatives of the public. The Governor appoints each member of the board for a term of four years, subject to approval by the State Senate, and they may be reappointed.

The Board of Pharmacy office is located in Portland and consists of 23 dedicated staff members who, in addition to supporting the board, provide services in Licensing, Compliance, Communications, and Operations.

The Licensing team process license applications and renewals for 34 license categories, including Pharmacists, Interns, Pharmacy Technicians, and multiple types of drug outlets (retail, institutional, nonprescription, wholesaler, manufacturer and others). The Licensing team manage over 31,000 active licenses.

The Compliance team consists of a dedicated team of Pharmacists with experience in all aspects of pharmacy practice, as well as a support staff of tenured professionals. Compliance Officers conduct inspections of drug outlets to promote public safety, investigate complaints from the public and healthcare personnel and provide compliance consultation with licensees. The team works closely with other State and Federal agencies such as the Oregon Health Authority, DEA and FDA to carry out the mission of the board. To learn more, view our Annual Performance Measures.

The Administrative team consists of tenured professionals who are responsible for compliance with State processes, budget & accounting, rulemaking, records management, personnel management, information technology and public outreach. **PHONE SCAM ALERT**

The board has become aware that licensees are receiving scam phone calls from individuals impersonating Oregon Board of Pharmacy staff members. Licensees should be cautious of giving confidential or payment information over the phone without verifying that the source is legitimate. Board staff will never ask for or accept payment for any fees by phone.

Scammers, claiming to be board staff members, are calling pharmacists and saying that their facility or individual license is under investigation. Scammers may also state that they are working with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on a case, and further claim that the licensee is under investigation for suspicious activity or drug trafficking.

In either case, the scammers claim that licensees will face disciplinary action, a revoked license, or arrest if they do not immediately pay a fine over the phone.

Additionally, many scammers are “spoofing” the phone number used to call the pharmacist. Spoofing involves disguising the caller’s true phone number and making it appear that the phone number is from a legitimate source. Scammers may even give a fake name and a fraudulent Compliance Officer/Inspector identification number as “proof” of identity.

If the call sounds suspicious, hang up and call the board directly at 971-673-0001 or email pharmacy.compliance@bop.oregon.gov.

Please know:
  • Oregon Board of Pharmacy Compliance Officers will identify themselves by name and title on any phone call. If you have any concerns about their identity, please ask to call them back at the office directly. Call the board office (971) 673-0001 and ask to speak with the identified Compliance Officer.
  • If a Compliance Officer requests entrance at your pharmacy, the Compliance Officer will have an Oregon State ID badge with a photo and a State of Oregon, Board of Pharmacy business card that lists their name and title. If you still have concerns of permitting this person into your pharmacy, please call our office at (971) 673-0001 to confirm that Compliance Officer's identity.
  • The board does not perform investigations on behalf of other government agencies including the DEA and FBI.
  • The frequency and sophistication of these scams are increasing, please be on alert and contact the appropriate government agency to authenticate these requests prior to providing any personal information.
