Transitioning to the Revised Writing Scoring Guide

Essential Skills | Writing Work Sample Tasks

Documents and links on this page are intended to support districts as educators make the transition from the current Official Writing Scoring Guide to the Revised Writing Scoring Guide.

During the 2016-2017 school year, either the Official Writing Scoring Guide or the Revised Writing Scoring Guide may be used to score Essential Skills samples used to demonstrate writing proficiency for purpose of receiving a diploma. Starting with the 2017-2018 school year, the Revised Writing Scoring Guide becomes the official version. Copies of both versions of the writing guides can be found on the Scoring Guides page.

Scored Student Work with Commentary

These exemplar papers show student work at various achievement levels. From relatively low papers to those that are high and exceed the standard. Included on the grid are two commentaries for each exemplar paper, one based on the Official Writing Scoring Guide, and one based on the Revised Scoring Guide. Note that while the commentary differs slightly depending on which version of the scoring guide is used, the scores remain the same. This reflects that the expectations for meeting the standard remain the same even though some of the scoring guide language has changed to align more closely to Common Core Writing Standards.
