Public and private entities; approval by the Oregon Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention (ACDP) Program required prior to specimen submission.

Specimen Collection Details

Collection
Nasopharyngeal Swab collected according to standard technique and immediately placed into up to 3 mL of viral or universal transport media (VTM or UTM) or normal saline. 
Optimal Volume
3 mL VTM or UTM
Minimum Volume
1 mL VTM or UTM
HandlingStore specimens at refrigerated temperatures (2-8°C) pending transport. 

Specimens that will not be tested within 72 hours of collection must be frozen, preferably at -20ºC, and transported on dry ice.

TransportSpecimens must be tested within 3 calendar days of specimen collection, if refrigerated. Specimens may be tested up to 30 days after specimen collection if frozen.

Package specimens with fully frozen ice packs to maintain refrigerated temperatures during transport. Transport for receipt at the OSPHL as soon as possible after specimen collection.

If specimen is frozen, package specimens with dry ice to maintain frozen temperatures during transport.

Rejection Criteria
Specimens not approved for testing 
 
Specimens are subject to the requirements of the OSPHL Specimen Submission Policy (pdf).
Comments
Original material submitted for testing is retained for 7 calendar days after receipt at the laboratory.
