How to Order

On the OSPHL Virology/Immunology Test Request Form, in the "Referral Testing/Send-Outs" section, write in the test(s) ordered under "Non-CDC Referral."

Approval by an Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention Section (ACDP) epidemiologist required.

Transportation
One 7 mL red top or serum separator tube (SST). Plasma or post-mortem heart blood is also acceptable.

Transport specimens to the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL). OSPHL will forward specimens to IBL for testing. IBL will not accept specimens directly from Oregon healthcare providers and laboratories. 
Rejection CriteriaPer the IBL Clinical Specimen Submission Guide*: specimens containing observable particulate material, suspended fibrin particles or aggregates; severely hemolyzed or heat-inactivated specimens. Additional criteria may be provided in the IBL Specimen Submission Guide. 

Specimens are also subject to the requirements of the OSPHL Specimen Submission Policy (pdf).

CommentsThe Idaho Bureau of Laboratories Hantavirus IgM &IgG assay is specific for Sin Nombre Virus only. If a different Hantavirus is suspected, contact OSPHL or ACDP for guidance prior to submitting specimens.
