Specimen Collection Details

Collection
Collect 5 mL blood in a lithium-heparin specimen collection tube.
Gently mix by inverting the tube several times to dissolve the heparin within three hours of collection.

Label the collection tube with the time of collection in addition to standard patient identifiers.

HandlingStore lithium-heparin tube at refrigerated temperatures (2-8°C) pending transport. Do not centrifuge.
Transport
Transport specimen at refrigerated temperatures and for receipt at OSPHL within 44 hours of collection, M - F, between 8:00AM and 3:00PM. 

Do not collect or transport for receipt at the OSPHL on the business day before a holiday. Avoid transporting specimens on Thursdays for delivery on Friday mornings.
Rejection CriteriaSpecimens not received by the OSPHL within 48 hours of specimen collection; specimens  received at ambient temperatures; specimens received the business day immediately preceding a holiday.

Specimens are subject to the requirements of the OSPHL Specimen Submission Policy (pdf).
CommentsOriginal material submitted is not retained at OSPHL after receipt. Specimen is immediately transferred into proprietary tubes for testing.

QFT-Plus is an indirect test for M. tuberculosis infection (including disease) and is intended for use in conjunction with risk assessment, radiography, and other medical and diagnostic evaluations.

Limitations of Procedure - The performance of QFT-Plus has not been extensively evaluated with specimens from the following groups of individuals: individuals with impaired immune functions, individuals younger than 17 years of age, and pregnant women.
