How to OrderIf submitting an isolate, on the General Microbiology Test Request Form (OHA0060), in the "Enterics" section, check the "VIBID" box in the "Vibrio spp." row.

If submitting original material, follow the instructions for Enteric Pathogen Culture.

If previous testing was conducted using a culture-independent diagnostic test (CIDT), in the "Specimen/Isolate Information" section, for "Was an original test performed on a CIDT platform?" select "Yes" and attach your laboratory's result reports.

Time to ReportingFor isolates or original material submitted, within 7 working days after receipt of specimen

Preliminary report will be sent upon isolate confirmation followed by a final report for species identification.
Public Health DataDe-identified data from sequencing foodborne pathogenic bacteria are submitted to the national repository bank, NCBI, and also shared with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PulseNet, as part of genomic surveillance and epidemiological data sharing.

Specimen Collection Details

CollectionIf submitting an isolate (preferred), submit a pure culture of isolate on an agar slant or non-selective plate media.

If submitting original material for culture, please follow the Specimen Collection Details for the Enteric Pathogen Culture.

HandlingSeal plate, place in biohazard transport bag. Store plate at room temperatures (20-25°C) pending transport.
TransportPackage plate to maintain room temperatures during transport.

Do not collect or transport for receipt at the OSPHL on a state holiday. Sample integrity may be compromised.
Rejection CriteriaSpecimens are subject to the requirements of the OSPHL Specimen Submission Policy (pdf).
Comments Vibrio cholerae strains will be evaluated for confirmation of serogroups O1 and O139.

Original material submitted for testing is retained for 5 calendar days after receipt at the laboratory.
