Otago Exercise Program

What is Otago?

The Otago Exercise Program (Otago)
is an individually tailored, home-based, balance and strength fall prevention program delivered by a physical therapist.

Otago began in New Zealand and was developed, tested and demonstrated to be effective for reducing falls and fall-related injuries among high-risk individuals: adults more than 80 years of age and those who have had a previous fall within one calendar year. Otago also increased the percentage of older adults who were able to live independently in their community.

Otago may be covered by Medicare Part A, Part B and Medicare Advantage.

  • Beyond the Clinic physical therapists are currently offering the Otago program to seniors in the Portland area.
  • NW Senior and Disability Services is currently offering the Otago program to seniors in the Salem area.
  • Infinity Rehab physical therapists are currently offering the Otago program to seniors in the Portland, Salem, and Eugene areas.
