For Hearing Screeners

Hearing screeners help screen newborns and educate families on the importance of newborn hearing screenings. Additionally, they support families in scheduling follow-up appointments prior to discharge for infants who do not pass. Screeners should have a plan for missed screenings and equipment malfunctions that may impact their ability to complete screenings. 

  • This course provides the foundation for newborn hearing screening, and an introduction to be​st practices. Hands-on training and supervision of new screeners is still needed. Annual training is recommended to maintain skills and ensure accurate screening.

By law, all newborn hearing screening and rescreening results must be shared with the Oregon EHDI program within 10 days of the screening. Here are the ways facilities share results: 
  • OVERS: Most birth facilities report their results through the OVERS Hearing Screening Module when filing the child’s birth certificate. 
  • EHR: Some birth facilities provide hearing screening results directly from their Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Contact Oregon.EHDI@odhsoha.oregon.gov for more information. 
  • EHDI-IS: Some facilities have hospital staff who can access records in EHDI-IS to report on screenings and re-screenings. Contact Oregon.EHDI@odhsoha.oregon.gov for more information.

  • ​For results staff are unable to enter in OVERS or EHDI-IS, use this form and fax it to Oregon EHDI. 

For babies who do not pass their hearing screening:  
  • Schedule the follow-up appointment with the family before they go home.  
  • If that is not possible, send the referral to a designated facility before the family goes home. 
Please review this page for the list of facilities that have the equipment and capability of performing rescreening or diagnostic audiology testing. The facility list is updated frequently and may include options that are not listed in an insurance directory or medical system. Develop a relationship with hearing screeners/audiologists near your facility for smooth coordination of care.
