Oregon State Hospital celebrates its patient-created art throughout both of its campuses.
The newest addition, “Global Warming” by Orlando “Carlos” Heredia, now adorns the unit consult room on Bird 2.
“I’m an abstract surrealist,” said Heredia of Bird 2. “Surrealism is all about not being normal. I want people to look at this mural and feel a strange sensation.”
The wall mural depicts a bright yellow polar bear surrounded by blueish-green land and a teal sky. In the distance is bright pink sun and peach pyramids, representing Egypt.
Interested in art since he was a child, Heredia received formal training in graphic design, print making and drawing at Portland State University. Not only does he hope to create additional murals for the hospital, he’d love to break into the professional art world one day.
“Art is a big part of my life,” he said. “I want to take it as far as I can. The reason I make art is because I want to create beauty.”
