Reporting TB Disease

Reporting TB Disease

As per OAR 333-018-0015 Health Care Providers and licensed laboratories are required to report to the local public health authority within one working day human cases or suspected human cases of Mycobacterium tuberculosis disease. Some TB disease cases may be subject to restrictions on their activities. Reporting also enables appropriate public health follow-up for patients, helps identify outbreaks, and provides a better understanding of Oregon morbidity patterns.

Reports for TB disease should be made when any of the following is true:

  • TB disease is one of the primary differential diagnoses. This often occurs when:
    • Signs and symptoms of TB are present and/or
    • The patient has an abnormal chest x-ray consistent with TB or
    • The patient is started on multi-drug therapy for TB
  • When the patient has a positive PCR for M. tuberculosis (e.g. GeneXpert, NAAT).
  • When the patient has a positive culture for M. tuberculosis complex (e.g. M. tuberculosis, M. bovis, M. canetti, M. africanum)
  • When a pathology report is consistent with tuberculosis (e.g. caseating or non-caseating granuloma, necrotizing granuloma)

Make reports to the local public health authority for the patient's county of residence.

Latent TB infection is NOT reportable in Oregon.
