Did someone say puppy party? A passel of 8-week-old Labrador retrievers visited the OSH-Salem's service dog training program. The hospital has a long-standing partnership with Joys of Living Assistance Dogs (JLAD) to provide patients the opportunity to train the animals for careers in service positions. The socialization helps the puppies hone their senses of smell and hearing – important skills to learn to understand changes in their future clients’ health and environment.
Currently, three OSH patients are working with JLAD dogs to prepare them for service certification. The dog training program is one of several vocational education options that offer OSH patients job skills and wages to get them ready for their transition back into their communities.
