Infection Prevention and Control

The HAI Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Program keeps healthcare facilities and their patients safe from infections through collaboration and targeted outreach. Our team of infection prevention experts provides education and consultation to healthcare providers and facilities throughout Oregon.

Infection control prevents or stops the spread of infections in healthcare settings. Preventing infections requires applying strategies and protocols to stop the spread of diseases within healthcare facilities.

Regional IP Seminars

Stay current with infection prevention best practices through our monthly regional IP seminars, open to all healthcare and public health professionals across Oregon. Each group meets monthly for one hour to discuss emerging strategies, share insights, and learn from peers. Whether you're new to infection prevention or a seasoned professional, these webinars offer practical tools and timely updates to support your work.

ICAR (Infection Control Assessment and Response) Consults

Our ICAR program offers voluntary consultations to healthcare facilities like dental clinics, dialysis centers, long-term care facilities, hospitals, and outpatient offices. ICARs are used to systematically assess a healthcare facility’s IPC practices and guide quality improvement activities (e.g., by addressing identified gaps). They are designed to help you improve infection prevention practices before a problem arises and provide guidance and support when there is an outbreak or infection control problem.

During an ICAR consultation, here's what you can expect:

  • Requesting the Consultation: When your facility requests an ICAR consultation, your regional infection preventionist (IP) will promptly reach out to you. We'll discuss your areas of interest and gather preliminary data to ensure our assessment is tailored to your specific needs.
  • Assessment and Discussion: We will then arrange a meeting with you, either virtually or in person, where our IP will conduct a comprehensive assessment alongside you. We'll discuss any areas of concern, observe care provided and answer any questions you have. Our goal is to identify actionable opportunities for improvement and enhance your infection control measures.
  • Recommendations and Feedback: After the assessment, we will provide you with detailed recommendations to strengthen your infection prevention practices. We'll also send you a survey to gather feedback on your experience and the effectiveness of our process. We value your input and want to make sure our program meets your needs.
  • Follow-up and Ongoing Support: If you have any questions or need further clarification, our IP team will be available to provide follow-up support. We encourage you to maintain an ongoing relationship with us, as we are here to assist you with any future infection prevention concerns or inquiries.

Participating in an ICAR consultation demonstrates your commitment to maintaining a safe environment for your facility. We are dedicated to supporting you every step of the way and helping you implement best practices in infection prevention.
