PFAS Investigation at Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base

Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base, located southeast of Klamath Falls, has reported the highest levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) detections in Oregon to date and is DEQ's top priority for PFAS investigation and remediation. The high levels of PFAS is a concern because there are nearby private domestic drinking water wells downgradient of the base that may be impacted. There is currently no PFAS sampling data from downgradient domestic drinking water wells.

DEQ is offering free well sampling to domestic drinking water well owners within 0.5 miles east and southeast of Kingsley ANG Base in Klamath Falls. Sampling is expected to occur in May 2026.

To participate, fill out the access agreement by April 28, 2026.

DEQ's Top Priorities

DEQ is working to protect residents from PFAS by minimizing exposure from known sources and actively investigating new and potential sources. Sampling domestic drinking water wells downgradient of Kingsley ANG Base is an important first step in cleanup.

Domestic Well Sampling

Although it is currently unknown if any private domestic drinking water wells have been impacted, DEQ is prioritizing the sampling of these wells because of the concern for PFAS impacts on public health.

PFAS-contamination can travel miles from a source through groundwater and surface water and affect the safety of drinking water. Nearby private wells downgradient of the base may be impacted.

Public Health and Safety

In coordination with the Oregon Health Authority, DEQ is working to educate and protect residents from PFAS by minimizing exposure from known sources and actively investigating new and potential sources.

The high on-site concentrations of PFAS in groundwater at Kinglsey ANG Base suggest that even short-term exposure to contamination (<1 year) could cause serious health impacts to those consuming potentially contaminated groundwater, in addition to an increased lifetime risk of developing cancer.

Sources of PFAS

PFAS compounds were detected at multiple sites at Kinglsey ANG Base, with the highest concentrations at former fire training areas. Military installations and airports are common sources of PFAS, primarily from firefighting foam.

Current data indicates that Kingsley Air National Guard Base is primarily responsible for on-base PFAS contamination. Under new rules, DEQ can require PFAS testing at sites where an environmental release is a significant concern based on site history or past industrial practices and exposure risks.
