Hazardous Materials

The Oregon Department of Transportation works closely with the Department of Environmental Quality to identify and correct hazardous material issues.

ODOT's Hazardous Materials Group is responsible for facilitating agency compliance with environmental regulations pertaining to site cleanup, waste management, water discharges, and hazardous materials use.

Services to Achieve Goals

Corridor and Site Assessments

  • Conducting assessments to determine the presence of contamination prior to property acquisition or construction. 
  • Surveying building materials, such as asbestos containing materials, PCB lamp ballasts, fluorescent tubes and other mercury lamps, lead-based pint, etc., to determine appropriate removal and disposal options.

Guidance on Site Cleanup and Hazardous Materials Management

  • Overseeing underground storage tank and underground injection control system (dry well) decommissioning.
  • Conducting cleanup of maintenance yards and surplus properties.

Mitigation Support for Contaminated Sites

  • Providing guidance on fuel storage, hazardous materials use and waste management.
  • Working with DEQ and Department of Justice to determine liability for cleanup of contamination in ODOT right-of-way.

Guidance on Jobsite and Worker Safety

  • Ensuring provisions are in place to protect workers and the environment during construction.
  • Providing guidance on fuel storage, hazardous materials use and waste management.
